I just wanted to share this site with anyone who hasn’t heard of it yet. Pandora is a music site that plays music you are likely to enjoy based on music you know you already like. All you have to do is enter a song or artist you like and Pandora will choose similar songs to play. They do this using the music genome project. I know there are many other sites out there that try to do something similar, but from my experience Pandora does the best job at choosing songs I like but have never heard before. They do a good job at leveraging the power of the internet to customize content based on individual preference.
I first started using Pandora about a year ago, but have started using it more frequently after having heard the founder speak at a conference recently. I would probably use it as my only source of music if they had some sort of portable music device, since I tend to get bored easily when listening to songs I own, and find public radio often plays music I don’t really like. I am a huge fan of Pandora.

Chris,
It’s too bad you didn’t come to SLC when Tim met up with the CodeAway crew. It was a much more intimate setting and Tim is SO inspiring. You can read about what I came away with here:

Once a month, CodeAway gets together. Next month, we have a representative from XMission coming. It would be nice to see you there!

I am definitely interested in CodeAway events. Where are your events listed? Is it open to everyone?
I totally agree, i think Pandora is great! And i love it how i can tell them that i don’t like a song so that they can refine what they play.
Reminds me of when I started buying CMJ magazines in the 90’s and I discovered a whole lot of new bands because when they reviewed a CD they’d add a list of bands the CD sounded related to. That was very helpful….and now there’s something like that online. Awesome!
Please let me suggest The Best Radio You Have Never Heard Podcast.
~80 minute long music compilations which feature intriguingly mixed rock and rock-based songs from a variety of artists that in other contexts might be considered incompatible. Genres, rhythms, moods and artists are seamlessly blended together to produce listening experiences you can only dream about finding in traditional radio. BRYHNH includes favorites and new discoveries from both familiar artists and those you wish you’d heard before.
And it’s portable as any mp3.

I know Pandora and use it daily. The unique regret they don’t admit classical music.
